Sandsfoot Castle

Sandsfoot Castle & Gardens – A Hidden Gem in Weymouth

Just a short stroll from the harbour and one of our personal favourite spots to escape to, Sandsfoot Castle is a peaceful blend of history, nature, and breathtaking sea views.

Built in the 16th century by Henry VIII to defend the coast from foreign invasion, the castle now stands in romantic ruins. What remains is a fascinating glimpse into our Tudor past – imagine soldiers keeping watch over Portland Harbour, cannons poised, and the sea lapping below.

But it’s not just about the history – the surrounding Sandsfoot Gardens are beautifully maintained and a joy to explore. You’ll find vibrant flowerbeds, shady trees, and benches perfectly placed to soak in the scenery (and maybe enjoy a quiet cuppa or picnic). The views across to Portland are stunning on a clear day.

It’s a lovely spot for:

  • History enthusiasts – with informative boards that bring the past to life.
  • Nature lovers – the gardens are full of colour and birdlife.
  • Anyone seeking a peaceful break from the bustle of town.

We often recommend it for a quiet afternoon wander, especially if you enjoy places with a story to tell. And if you’re feeling energetic, the Rodwell Trail passes right by – a scenic walking and cycling path that follows the old railway line.

As always, if you’d like directions, a walking route, or even a flask of tea to take along – just ask!
