Nothe Fort – History with a View
Just a 15-minute stroll from our front door, Nothe Fort is one of Weymouth’s true highlights – and it’s easy to see why it’s rated the town’s number one heritage attraction.
Built between 1860 and 1872 to defend Portland and Weymouth harbours, this impressive coastal fort is steeped in history and packed with fascinating exhibits. From secret underground passageways to restored wartime rooms and interactive displays, it’s a real hit with both adults and children alike.
Perched on the headland at the entrance to the harbour, the fort also offers some of the best views in Weymouth – you can see across to Portland, the harbour, and out to sea. It’s a brilliant spot for photos, especially on a clear day!
Throughout the year, Nothe Fort hosts a range of events including historical re-enactments, live music, family fun days and seasonal celebrations – so it’s always worth checking what’s on during your visit.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, love a good view, or simply want a lovely walk with something to discover at the end of it, Nothe Fort is a must-see.
Let us know if you’d like help planning your visit or tips on where to stop along the way (the gardens nearby are lovely for a picnic or a breather).
