A Weekend Itinerary for Exploring Weymouth & the Jurassic Coast

Planning a short break to the Dorset coast? Weymouth is a brilliant base for exploring the very best of the Jurassic Coast — and our seaside guest house in Weymouth, The Wadham, puts you right in the heart of it. We’re just a stone’s throw from the harbour, the beach, and Weymouth’s historic Georgian town centre.

Whether you’re drawn to fossil-filled cliffs, sea breezes, a good pub meal, or a stroll by the boats, this gentle 3-day itinerary gives you a flavour of what’s waiting just outside our front door.

🗓️ Day 1: Arrive & Unwind by the Sea

Afternoon
Check in and settle into your room at The Wadham Guest House — a friendly, family-run B&B in Weymouth. We’re just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and harbour, so once you’ve dropped your bags, it’s time to take in the sea air.

Head down to Weymouth Beach for a walk along the golden sands or the promenade. Depending on the season, you might stumble across a classic Punch & Judy show, live music, fireworks, or just a calm, peaceful sunset over the bay. It’s one of our favourite times of day.

Evening
As the sun starts to dip, take a gentle stroll along the Old Harbour. You’ll see colourful boats, quirky shops and pastel-painted cottages lining the water. Don’t miss the moment when the Town Bridge lifts — it still gets us after all these years.

For dinner, we recommend The Ship Inn for a cosy pub atmosphere and hearty food, or The Stable if you fancy wood-fired pizza and local cider with views of the harbour. Both are just minutes from our Weymouth guest house — perfect for a relaxed first evening.

🗓️ Day 2: Discover the Jurassic Coast

Morning
After a good breakfast (served right here at The Wadham if you’ve pre-ordered!), it’s time to get out and explore the dramatic Jurassic Coast. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of craggy cliffs, sweeping views and ancient stories carved into stone.

First stop: Lulworth Cove — a stunning, naturally formed bay with turquoise waters and fossil-filled cliffs. You can drive there, hop on a Jurassic Coaster bus, or even take a boat trip from Weymouth Harbour, which gives you amazing views of the coastline from the sea. If you’re up for a bit of a clifftop walk, head over to Durdle Door, one of the South’s most iconic landmarks. It’s a favourite for photographers, walkers, and anyone who loves a good sea breeze.

Lunch
Pause for lunch in West Lulworth village. You’ll find welcoming pubs and cafés offering local seafood, crab sandwiches, or a Dorset cream tea if that’s more your thing.

Afternoon
On your way back, take a short detour to Sandsfoot Castle — a crumbling Tudor fort built by Henry VIII, now sitting quietly above Portland Harbour. The views are stunning, and the grounds are a peaceful spot for a stroll or a sit-down. We often pack a flask and enjoy the gardens there — it’s one of those hidden little gems.

Evening
Back in Weymouth, treat yourself to dinner at one of our independent restaurants (we’re always happy to recommend a favourite). Or grab a takeaway and enjoy it by the water — there’s nothing like watching the boats while tucking into local fish and chips.

🗓️ Day 3: Nature, Nostalgia & a Cuppa Before You Go

Morning
Take it slow on your final morning. A peaceful walk through Nothe Gardens is a lovely way to start the day — winding paths, shady trees, and panoramic sea views.

At the heart of the gardens sits Nothe Fort, one of Tracie’s absolute favourite places in Weymouth. It’s calm, relaxing, and full of fascinating history. You can explore underground passageways, Victorian gun decks, and exhibitions — or simply sit with a coffee and enjoy the views over the bay.

Prefer birds to battlements? Just ten minutes away is RSPB Radipole Lake, a hidden nature reserve right in the heart of town. It’s a brilliant spot for birdwatching — you might see herons, marsh harriers or even the elusive bearded tit from the reedbed boardwalks.

Coffee, Ice Cream & Goodbyes
Before heading home from your weekend break in Dorset, stop for a coffee or browse the shops along St Alban Street. And no visit to Weymouth is complete without a Rossi’s ice cream — a proper local favourite that’s been scooping since 1937. It’s the perfect way to round off your weekend by the sea.
