A Day at Corfe Castle

History, Wildlife & Steam Train Magic

Yesterday, we spent the day exploring one of Dorset’s absolute gems – the magnificent Corfe Castle – and we’re still buzzing from it! Whether you’re into history, dramatic views, wildlife, or just love a day out in a picture-perfect village, Corfe really does tick every box.

The moment you arrive in Corfe village, it feels like stepping into a storybook. With its stone cottages, winding streets and cosy tearooms, the charm here is real – and very hard to leave behind! We couldn’t resist a slow wander before heading up to the castle itself.

Corfe Castle, or rather what remains of it, towers above the village with a commanding presence. Built by William the Conqueror over 1,000 years ago, this place is dripping in history and drama – from sieges and civil wars to royal intrigue and betrayal. The ruins are vast and full of atmosphere. We must have taken a hundred photos just trying to capture the sheer scale (and those incredible views).

As we explored the nooks and crannies, we were lucky enough to spot peregrine falcons nesting in the craggy walls – an absolute treat for any nature lover. Watching them soar over the ruins with the Purbeck Hills rolling out in the background? Just magical.

Speaking of magic – the Swanage Steam Railway puffs right through the village, and we were lucky to see the train roll past just as we were leaving the castle. The old station at Corfe is like something from a film set – beautifully preserved and full of nostalgia. You can ride the steam train from Swanage to Norden, passing right by the castle. It’s such a lovely way to see the countryside, and a great option if you’re not driving.

Corfe makes for a wonderful day trip from Weymouth – just under an hour’s drive – and you can easily make a full day of it with a castle visit, a pub lunch, and a wander on the railway. We’d recommend comfy shoes (there are a few hilly bits!), a camera, and if you’re anything like us – time for a stop at the village bakery or pub before heading back.

If you’re staying with us and fancy a bit of adventure and history, just ask – we’re always happy to help you plan a visit to Corfe or even pack a picnic for the road. Honestly, we can’t wait to go back.
